Project 5: Contextualizations

"I feel that the essence of dance is the expression of man, the landscape of his soul. I hope that every dance I do reveals something of myself or some wonderful thing a human can be."

The job of a dancer is to express true emotions and tell a story through their movements. They have to let go and act from a place of vulnerability and spontaneity. I want to create a piece that shows all the emotions that a dancer works to portray. I want to create little creatures from paper that was created from dancing with paint. The creatures will be created based off of little kid drawings. I want to use little kid drawings because of how creative and impulsive they are. Dancers have to tap into the creativeness and impulsiveness they had when they were children. The creatures will be put on black paper among white lines that will be created by hand and feet.

Contextualization is my skill for this project. Contextualization is understanding something in and out of its proper time and place due to environmental and situational factors involved. I am looking at emotions in dancers and children. I am taking the context of how children act on impulse and putting that to how dancers try to portray a story. I will do this by getting drawings from children (impulsive nature) and collaging together monster (emotions) based off their drawings. The paper used for collaging is being taken out of context from a dance and paint project to make monsters.

I did some research on artist who create based off of children drawings and I came across two that I liked. The first one is Dave DeVries who created the Monster Engine. The Monster Engine started simply by wanting to see what would happen if you added 3D and realism to children's original drawings. The second one was the Monster Project started by Katie Johnson. The Monster Project was created to help children understand their potential for imagination and help them pursue their creative side. They have multiple artist involved in the project that go and recreate the drawings of children.

I also looked up the meaning of color and how they relate to emotions. I did this so I can create my monsters to represent different emotions. The emotions are what the dancer portrays.

RED- Powerful, angry, passionate
ORANGE- Energetic, enthusiasm, balanced, warm
YELLOW- Joyful, happy, hopeful
GREEN- Healthy, lucky, jealous
BLUE- Peace, security, depression
PURPLE- Royal, wisdom, transformation
WHITE- Innocence, peace

My monsters have some inspiration from "Inside Out" too. They both are creatures that represent emotions and are colored accordingly.

I couldn't start this project till I had some drawings from children, so the one day I went to work with my mom and got just that.

Now that I had something to go off of, I picked the monsters I wanted to use and then started to cut out paper according to the picture. I picked five of them and each one got assigned to an emotion based off of the colors used.

Next, I got a big piece of black paper and glued down the paper to recreate the children's monsters. I also painted on some of the monsters additional features. Then I added on white marks with my hands and feet to symbolize the dancing. I didn't quite like how it looked when this was all said and done so I decided to add another element. I added a heart with string coming out of it that weaved in and out of the monsters connecting them all together. This is to show how dance connects us all together at a more personal level.

This project didn't turn out how I wanted it too, but I do kind of like the end result. Even though it didn't turn out how I expected, I think I did a good job and followed criteria well. I used my time in and out of class. I didn't settle with what I originally wanted. I kept adding to the piece till I was happy with it. I channeled my child artist. I used multiple different mediums. One thing I could do better is to not be so accurate with the children's monsters. I didn't need to follow them perfectly but just use them as reference.
